Alison Townsend is the author of two books of poetry, "The Blue Dress" and "What The Body Knows". She has an amazing ability to convey deep sorrow in her delicate poems.

Townsend was born in Pennsburg, Pennsylvania and grew up in New York. Her poetry and prose have appeared in various collections and literary journals. She makes her living by constructing richly textured words into complex beautiful designs and teaches creative writing students to do the same, as she is a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Knowing Alison is both a privileage as well as an extreme inspiration to anyone wishing to pursue a career in the creative writing field. She takes the talent of others and nurtures it until it is ready to emerge and stand on its own two feet. In merely listening to her speak, one realizes her deep passion to create and her divine ability to convey her thoughts and feelings through written and spoken word.

The Blue Dress" is her sophomore publication and it boasts emotive rhythms of the heart and of memory. Each poem in this collection reveals a glimpse into Townsend's world.

With lines like,"The woman is in love with the poem. It is a short poem, carved in the shape of a deer from ice" and "How the predilection for sadness is embedded within me, an obsidian arrow lodged in the heart, no matter how tight your good arms are around me" Townsend touched the lives of many readers. In this collection, she takes you through the grief of a woman burying her mother and all the way to meditations on an ex-husband that read her rought drafts.Townsend's poems and prose poems alike are immeasurable gems that bring the human spirit into a new light.

She has the ability to break your heart while simultaneously sewing up the sutures. Critics and friends alike have boasted that this collection "is filled with capacious, multi-faceted, and above all, physical knowledge" (Jane Hirshfield) and that "Townsend's poetry is to chart a course through the deepest of losses--to attempt some safe passage through a lifetime's erasures" (Mark Doty).

These assessments are quite poignant as Townsend is the courageous voice of a woman walking through life with words. Whether the reader is seeking a meaningful read or perhaps an inspiration for their own works in poetry, this book is a must have.
